Canadian visa issues making the news. I hope our bureaucrats get their act together prior to the start of the 2020 season and ensure players aren't denied entry

we don't need any SL teams crying foul  we want to beat then fairly.

Hello Robert.....I totally agree with you here, both regarding our bureaucrats and in winning our games at Lamport fairly.  What I found somewhat ironic in all this however was a tweet in the thread to the denied visa individual from a supporter.  I've pasted it below.  Seems that some in the AI research community kind of lay the "blame" for these happenings squarely at the feet of the "British".  Show that to the luddites.....

Tweet from a supporter....."Not only in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and UK are the same. Probably something they inherited from the British which has no place in the modern world!".

The problem is alot of these British visitors might not want to leave when they get here....would you really want to go back to say, Leigh? Even within a couple of days they could become addicted tasting the fruits of Toronto...the nightlife!....the women!....the higher quality Rugby League being played at Lamport!

Then they actually try real maple syrup, not that filthy disgusting corn syrup they eat over there and thats it!  "I'm not going back!", becomes a common phrase heard after a game at Lamport; especially from the Wigan fans!  Even during the game the Wigan fans will chant it!

A common scam is Africans getting invitations to a conference as a means to enter a wealthy country. They scam the organisers, get an official invitation, and then try to get a visa.

A variation is where legitimate conference attendees accept money to add an unqualified attendee to their travel group and sneak that person into the wealthy country.

Therefore, if the person from a country where these scams are common applies for a visa and doesn’t provide enough evidence regarding their personal credentials, your bureaucrats will simply refuse to grant a visa.

No issues with any of that, bureaucrats are paid to be diligent on our behalf but giving players with a less than pristine past a hard time or denying them entry when the UK courts have deemed them safe to circulate in polite society is not on.  We let politicians walk among us even when they should be locked up en masse.

I loathe most of them so i won't single out just one. One plus in DF's favour is he ended the reign of probably the provinces worst ever Premier.

Better stick with RL players, honest, hard working, value for money..the antithesis of a politician.

I don't know...I would say Mike Harris was worse...possibly Mitch Hepburn.....we have had some real doozies over the years....I believe Ford will go down as the very worst...pretty tough to beat Harris though.

I'm assuming this a attempt at Sarcasm? If so not a very good one, Canada actually has problems attracting Immigrants ,  Also Corn Syrup is banned in the UK ,The only products that are allowed to be sold is in Imported Canned soft drinks From the US, For some unknown reason people buy Pepsi Root beer ? ETC at double the price of a locally made stuff. The worst offenders are the USAF Personnel and there family's stationed at RAF Lakenheath & Mildenhall in Suffolk .

I couldn't live in a country that Brews Labatts and Molson. I live in Germany Here they'd wash there feet with Labatt Blue.

So I guess you moved to Germany because a Canadian beer (Carling) is UK's most popular beer brand?

Not sure why you say we have problems attracting immigrants. Statistics Canada reports over a million between 2011 and 2016, and that over 21% of our population of over 37 million people are immigrants (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/en/subjects/immigration_and_ethnocultural_diversity).

I have no problem living in a country that brew Labatts and Molson. Oh don't drink those beers, of course! We have a thriving industry of craft breweries making good stuff across the country, and in many different varieties of beer. Some of the craft breweries are owned by the big companies, so some Labatt and Molson products are actually good!

Come over for a game, and of course you'll get many chances to try a few!

Cheers!

Normally when one celebrates the end of a hated government it isn't usually because an even worse one has taken over.

This isn't anything bureaucrats need to get their act together over. This is a legitimate denial of visas based on a history of misuse.

Previous visa issues related to RL players were all due to disqualifying factors (i.e. criminal record), improperly completed applications or applications made well after the recommended deadline.

None of these are the fault of the Canadian immigration officials.

It's the officials responsible for each visiting team that need to ensure they get their acts together,

The Wynne government was both incompetent and corrupt. Ford may be wrong on a lot of things but so far he hasn't descended into the pit of corruption occupied by the Wynne gang

Disagree. improper completion and late applications - sure, no excuse but criminal records expunged by the UK courts should not mean our Government can unfairly deny entry. These players aren't emigrating they are here for a period to play a game.

Can we please keep the local politics out of this thread (and forum)? We all know by now that there are fierce political divisions that are not going to get reconciled here. I want rugby league (and all sport) to be an escape from these kids of divisions.

Those are mighty thick rose coloured glasses. Take them off before arguing politics, my boy.

Government can do whatever they like since entry is based on Canadian law. Either it did not meet the Canadian definition of a pardon or the paperwork in connection to it was not in order. No one is being unfairly denied.

Balderdash. its not based on law at all..it's one bureaucrats personal interpretation of a UK court ruling or decision and it should never be left to an individual..an expunged conviction is just that, your record is clean - no rationale for denying someone entry.

You clearly lack an understanding of Canadian law and immigration procedures so I'm not sure why you're so determined to go off about this.

Please stop pontificating. Unless you are a specialist in this area my opinion is as valid as yours. I will try and make my position simple for you. If an individual has paid his debt to society and poses no danger to the public as determined by a UK court what right does a Canadian bureaucrat have to deny that person entry to this country?

And the reason I am "going off" on it is I do not want any visiting club or their fans to claim the Wolfpack only won because their team was short players. This has happened in the past and we can assume it would happen in the future. That is all.

Absolutely. Here's a picture of a Brit last year trying to make it to the airport.

Ouf what's going on here?

I understand all points of view here but... it is what it is. I cross the UK-Schengen-US-Canadian-Australia border on a regular basis because of my job and private life, it's not getting any better, the trend is there.

Whether we like it or not

  • 5 eye countries (and a lot of their friends) share a lot of bad information about all of us but never good information
  • the moment you step on the other side of the border you basically renounce all your rights
  • sportsmen rarely have a specific status, so they are treated like any traveler, so like any potential job stealing immigrant or rapist or terrorist or the 3 combined
  • border controls will be tougher and tougher because politicians lose popularity and public opinion is scared

But let's be positive, we are in the big league now, with mature and competent people, with players recognized by border agents, everyone should be welcome.
