Film Thread (What have you been watching?)
gingerjon replied to John Drake's topic in Any Other Business / Any Other Sports
I remember looking her up at the time I saw the film and being surprised how few movies she'd done. Looking again on wiki just now, it looks like a lot of fairly okay TV roles in her career but no films since Palm Springs. -
The global audience would stand a good chance of being smaller than the domestic so why bother?
-
You'll note that once the Aussies worked out how to be actually fit professionals and not just lumps of meat to be hacked around a park that that stopped happening.

Was this when the sport went bankrupt, players had long term unsupported injuries in their retirement, and we still had to fill our squads by poaching lads from union?

Post five on page one.

With one major point of learning: do not play this mid season showcase where the game is already saturated. That's not fishing where the fishes are. That's overkill.

The Reality of the IMG Grading System
gingerjon replied to DemonUK's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
The amusing twist is that the league got their rule wrong and gave a bye to the wrong club (apparently). That has now been sorted. -
And this is where we fundamentally disagree. If it doesn't go well then that's time, money and our limited number of representative windows wasted. That's a big deal given these things are meant to make money, raise the game's profile and improve the players.

That makes it very easy for a Roses match to be a success. You've set the bar at "just play it".

I think the handball was a clear penalty given how handball is called now. The others would, I think, now always go with the on field ref's call.

The Reality of the IMG Grading System
gingerjon replied to DemonUK's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I think I said at the time that it was an indicator of the criteria being marked as cheaply as possible. Doing things in such a way is a rugby league wide problem. -
We should try that. Now, just need to find some Gentlemen.

Replacing doing one thing badly with doing another badly doesn't really feel like progress.

SOO is, as far as I can tell, basically unique in world sport. The curse for us is that it exists in rugby league and rugby league only has two professional set-ups. And because that 'unique in world sport' outlier works in one, the other sometimes thinks it should work for it as well.

What a crazy football day. These were just 'my' bits: And here's Newhaven celebrating that title:

So Nottingham Forest outright accusing a referee of being bent (not just being wrong) may not be the biggest soccer story of the day.

How does this compare with other sites? My feeling is we're close to zero articles across all the former broadsheets, slightly better in the legacy tabloids.

A fair set of questions. I think we can say that 'ceasing to exist' is a kind of failure. No one really noticing that it ceased to exist speaks to a wider failure. The crowds were okay. They were fine. But never more than that. We would also kill for the level of marketing they got - for example, Sky trailed it for ages in advance, like they did with the Exiles, like they don't really do now. The players may have got a run out in a rep environment but what did that translate to for England performances (that's a genuine Q - I can't remember which years and series it fitted into). In my view, we should note just how badly the mid season internationals (and, indeed, end of season ones) are done and realise that the Roses will be done by the same people, in the same way. They won't magically have more money or more commitment. The solution to one thing being done badly is not to come up with another thing done badly.

Conductor Andrew Davis. Many, many great performances and speeches at the Proms. -
The Worst Last Post Ever?
gingerjon replied to Sports Prophet's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
This is it. It is insanely hard to do and, from speaking to a couple of people I know who do play the Last Post semi-regularly, very, very hard to get back once you know you've lost it. -
If the game was played, I would watch it, assuming it was on a platform I have access to, - attending would be unlikely - and want a Yorkshire win. I would probably, based on track record, underestimate the on the day attendance beforehand. What hasn't changed is that it would be a budget offer, draw in no new fans or sponsors, and likely feature players who have greater commitments by far to their club sides.

Like him or loathe him, Joe Lycett's recent stunt of getting several fake stories into quite a few media outlets was very revealing about the state of play.
