Well done, I am pleased for you.

I read the Sporting Life too, though sometimes I am not sure which tipster to follow.

Nor me really although I had some success following Greg Wood’s tips (Guardian website) at the Cheltenham festival.

I’ve decided to try and learn more about the sport and the horses this year for a pure pleasure perspective not just for small wager gambling.

I’m also going to visit Haydock Park which is the nearest to me on a quiet midweek meet just to experience these magnificent animals at full gallup.

anyone would think that the human race "invented" animals for their own sporting entertainment , to work for us and stick on the bbq

True . Ancient Stone Age men invented snails to race against each other , even making a little course with hurdles , and they’d place bets . Archaeological evidence has been found of this , including betting slips

This is the story of a diversion.

We're on our way we know the route but our satnav is on because we're hoping to stop at a restaurant on the way. Then we have the diversion sign on our route because of Royal Ascot and the diversion sign.

This took us away from our original route and through the middle of Ascot.

If any of you have been lucky enough to go the 1930's rich people's buffet you'll know the rest of the story, our journey was nearly two hours longer than it should've been. We were treated to more police than I ever seen in the rest of my life, and as the wife said "It's like being in selfish entitlement "but I want to" world on steroids!"

Who knew there were so many people with the dress sense of an Orangutan?

My wife was driving and the number of attempts to bully were incredible. None of them succeeded.

I have to say it made me homesick for all the stuff the RFL put on that compares very favourably with the organisation around this event.

And £45 for parking and they'd paid it!

This is not a political statement but I dread to think what it did to climate and clearly they all had a deep understanding and empathy for those suffering in the crisis at the moment.

I've never been to Ascot but I went the year Royal Ascot was at York.

I couldn't afford to go now unfortunately.

If yesterday day was anything to go by it's just as well.

I’ve never been to any horse racing, but have been told the ground shakes as these magnificent animals race by if you’re near the post.

It’s on the list for sure as something to experience and my local racecourse is Haydock.

Thinking about doing a midweek meet where it should be a bit quieter.

It’s something being by the rail or by a fence when they go by . The sheer speed and power is almost literally frightening … and the respect for a tiny jockey controlling that , and for their sheer bravery , is enhanced

I've been to Haydock and I enjoyed it. I used to holiday in Southport, which I really enjoyed.

Been to Royal Ascot but not Cheltenham , but the best racecourse in my opinion is York . Great views  , everything you need is handy , you can get easily from the parade ring to the bookies , and nice big screen opposite the Stand . Only problem is , when they moved Royal Ascot to York one year , it was hit with monsoon type weather , consequently they had to re-lay the track , and i have barely backed a winner since ! Seems to have become a front runners paradise , those held up have a tough job on .

This post was reported as political, I'm choosing not to remove it or move the thread as it fits with the tone of the original post. The point in reporting it has been made, thank you.

I'll leave the thread here on the condition that the thread does not become overtly political. Difficult subjects are fine, as long as they don't become political.

dogs and horses have no idea that they are "racing" each other nor do they care - if a horse really wanted to win a race am sure the little ###### sat on it would not need to whip it in to a frightened panicked state

Well said Johnny, for a country of so called animal lovers to allow this barbaric event to take place is a disgrace.

Never been a fan of horse racing (or the throwaway reporting of animal deaths), but if this latest dog-whistle takes the heat off Dom Young and/or Meghan Markle, it'll be a nice change.
