He took part in the famous 'Battle of Wilderspool ' on New Years Day in 1988. I lifted this excerpt from a guardian article; Ten minutes later Andy Goodway was sent off for a flying forearm smash to the back of Paul Cullen’s head, leaving the Wire centre face-down in the dirt. And off he trotted, straight over Cullen’s fingers. Adrenalised, the Warrington man leapt to his feet and clattered his attacker to the ground from behind, just in front of the dugouts. It took almost half of the Warrington team to drag Goodway clear of the melee. It's well worth a look on Youtube.

I thought they were going to announce a return to the Chiswick Polytechnic Stadium -
What's the best game you've been to?
Andy JG replied to wakeyranger's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
My memory is that we were deep in our own half and Phil Johnson launched either a penalty to touch or a touchfinder, wind assisted, which set up the position for the said scrum from which we scored. I used to own both the Oldham and Warrington games on VHS, but have become lost in house moves etc... -

Your 2nd game was brilliant..... last game of the season...lose and get relegated, win and stay up... WARRINGTON 10 – 17 LEIGH Match URL www.rugbyleagueproject.org/matches/16889 Status Completed Date Monday, 20th April, 1987 Referee Ray Tennant (Castleford) Venue Wilderspool (Warrington) Crowd 4,829 WARRINGTON SCORESHEET LEIGH Keith HOLDEN T 2 John HENDERSON Paul BISHOP 3 G 4 Chris JOHNSON FG Milton HUDDART WARRINGTON TEAMS LEIGH Brian JOHNSON 1 FB 1 Chris JOHNSON Des DRUMMOND 2 W 2 Neil McCULLOCH Joe ROPATI 3 C 3 John HENDERSON Ronnie DUANE 4 C 4 James LEULUAI Mark FORSTER 5 W 5 John KERR Keith HOLDEN 6 FE 6 Michael DAVIS Paul BISHOP 7 HB 7 Mike FORD Bob ECCLES 8 FR 8 David EVANS Mark ROSKELL 9 HK 9 Gary HUGHES Robert JACKSON 10 FR 10 Darren RAMSDALE Alan RATHBONE 11 2R 11 Derek PYKE Tony HUMPHRIES 12 2R 12 Milton HUDDART Andy MOSSOP 13 L 13 Tony COTTRELL B 14 Phil JOHNSON Mark ROBERTS 15 B 15 Andy COLLIER Tony BARROW HC Billy BENYON From memory we were getting beat 10-8 more or less on the 80th minute....i think we win a scrum ball, and Leuluai puts John Henderson in for a try...cue bedlam in the Leigh end...converted by Chris Johnson, and from the kick off Warrington kicked it out on the full , Johnson kicked the penalty from the half way line and the hooter went. Amazing. Leigh were dead and buried that season but won 8/10 of their last league matches. A surprising home defeat to Salford left us needing to win last 2, both away at Oldham and Warrington.. we hammered Oldham by 50 odd , leading to the Easter Monday at Wildespool. What a great memory your post triggered !! -

1978 Challenge Cup Final Leeds v St Helens.. my first wembley, a truly brilliant game in front of 96,000 , in the balance until the final hooter, and having watched it again numerous times , it stands comparison with any of the more modern day classics. . -
I too went to this game....by 1995 i'd stopped going watching Leigh regularly but a mate asked me if I fancied going... I'd somehow got it into my mind that Workington had run up 100 points... I can't really say looking back it's a bad memory though....all part of life really, something to look back on etc..

RL Challenge Cup Quarter Final Draw :
Andy JG replied to Old Frightful's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I vividly remember us winning away in the cup at Hull KR in February 1982 by 18-17 with a John Woods penalty very late in the game. It was the featured game on Grandstand, but it wasn't live, but they showed 30minutes highlights at about 4pm, with football latest scores continually coming up on the screen. I watched it without knowing the score and it was a pretty nerve shredding game as a Leigh fan. The video is available on the RL cares page on facebook. I actually went to a Hull KR - Leigh quarter final in 1986 when Leigh had a season in the 2nd Division, Hull KR running out comfortable 25-10 winners, going on to lose to Castleford at Wembley. -
Leigh are my team. However my first RL match was St.Helens v Bramley 17/04/74 at Knowsley Road, aged 7 and I loved it. Went with my aunt and uncle who were massive St Helens fans. However we lived a short bus ride from Leigh, and i was allowed to go aged 9 with an older friend (he was 12 I think) on the bus to watch Leigh v Barrow 5/09/76 in the 1st Division at Hilton Park. 18-8 to Leigh in front of a mere 1,967.. It was 25p to get in. I was amazed that I'd be able to go and watch live Rugby without waiting for the occasional invite from my aunt to watch Saints. So it was Leigh....my favourite sporting hero to this day is John Woods.

Wigan v Penrith World Club challenge at the JJB
Andy JG replied to THE RED ROOSTER's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Pre big match entertainment at Wigan used to be the Pemberton Brass Band. -
Definitely the smell from those 1970s & 80s hot dog/burger trollies outside grounds. Cigarette smoke. The smell of soup from the refreshment kiosk under the scoreboard at Leigh.

Adrian Durham is a pretty big League fan, and I've heard him mention Rugby League quite a bit. Hawksbee and Jacobs always mention it also and did a show from Warrington iirc last year.

Harry Pinner - Former GB Captain
Andy JG replied to David Dockhouse Host's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Yes I think it's Ian Potter. The picture is from the 1984/85 Lancashire Cup Final in front of over 26000 at Central Park. Also can see Nicky Kiss, Andy Platt and Peter Gorley. -

I'll give it a go. Sure it tastes better than Stones Bitter (Championship), Slalom Lager (Premiership), and Grunhalle Lager (Lancashire Cup), . -
Harry Pinner - Former GB Captain
Andy JG replied to David Dockhouse Host's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Harry was a magnificent ball playing loose forward, who could put a teammate through a gap with a brilliantly timed pass. I'm not sure that the type of player exists in the modern game. My main memories are from games I was in the crowd for as a youngster. 1977. St Helens v Warrington Premiership Final at Station Road....I was a 10 year old sat in the old wooden Townsend Road stand...Pinner was sent off for a full proper fist fight with Alan Gwilliam the Warrington scrum half. I don't recall much of the match apart from being there, Saints winning , and the sending off. 1978. St Helens v Leeds at Wembley. This is one of the, if not the greatest Cup Final of all time. Pinner was in the losing Saints team who made a try scored by Liptrot by launching an up and under which was dropped behind the Leeds line to gift Saints an early try. I was stood behind the posts at the tunnel end where this happened. I thought he was a great player. Pinner also played for my team Leigh at the end of his career (mid to late 80s) and was still pretty effective. He signed for Leigh from Widnes in part exchange for Derek Pyke another ball handling forward. I remember him having both the pubs mentioned , and the sign over the door on the Victoria in Newton le Willows said 'Harold Pinner'....I'd never seen him called by his full name before. My last sighting of him was behind him in a queue for fish and chips in the chippy on Newton High Street. It was maybe 25 years ago. -
Carlisle seemed to be ideally located, have a stadium of a good size, and they did have decent enough results at the start of their existence. They got promoted to the 1st division (iirc), and I recall them beating Leigh at Hilton Park in a lancs cup quarter final. Huyton was a team I saw play at Alt Park a few times in the late 1970s, and it was grim. Liverpool and it's suburbs is definitely not Rugby League territory, although Widnes only a few miles away is.

Documentary Series: We are York
Andy JG replied to Futtocks's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Excellent stuff. Going to be an exciting Championship season ahead. I was at the York-Leigh game in the clip from October 1988 which was York's last season at Wiggington Road. They hammered Leigh that day. -

I've been watching Wigan Athletic a few times in the recent past and I'd probably had more entertainment if the seats faced the other way. -
I remember my 1st Leigh season ticket for the 82/83 season with the numbered tickets in a book. I recall writing in pencil on each ticket once the fixtures came out the name of the opposing team. All very exciting stuff for a young lad.
-
One thing I was aware of with Wigan season tickets was the number of adults who use heavily discounted kids season tickets which are available for peanuts.

as somebody brought up on Rugby League commentary of Eddie Waring & Alex Murphy, the Sky Commentary is infinitely better.

My greatest childhood memory is being taken to the 1978 Challenge Cup Final, Leeds v St Helens by my uncle and auntie, who were staunch Saints fans. I was aged 11. My first time at Wembley, and recall the journey down on a chartered train from St Helens Shaw Street. In one of those carriages with a corridor and individual compartments. The size of the stadium, the atmosphere 96,000 crowd, but above all the quality of the match. I think it beats the 1985 Final (which I attended also) for excitement and drama with a 2nd half Leeds comeback. It is available in full on youtube and it stands up against anything you see today; i've watched it many times, and love the different attacking lines of play and the contested scrums. Brilliant stuff.

Bolton has always puzzled me as to why it's not a Rugby League town... just a few miles from both Leigh and Wigan
